THE ORGANISING TEAM

" Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people can change the world "

Sally Baker - organiser & producer

Sally has been passionate about women and empowering women for as long as she can remember. After her own transformational experiences of giving birth Sally became interested in childbirth and has attended many births as a doula. Supporting mothers and families though the childbearing year is a calling for her. Sally is also a social worker who has combined her two favourite topics and specialises in birth story healing & birth trauma debriefing. This play written by Karen Brody tells the truth about birth and women's experiences. She loves the way the play not only has real birth sounds and scenarios but also how the women telling their stories share their feelings, thoughts and reflections so openly and honestly. This play is so powerful and authentic that the audience will learn, laugh and cry. Sally believes she is honoured to be working with an amazing group of passionate women in the role of organiser of this production.

She has taken up the challenge as the director of the play 'Birth' as she wanted to be BOLD and bring about positive change within the community in Johannesburg. She is also very excited to be working with such an amazing group of strong, powerful women in the play and those part of the core committee, who have gone into this project with such passion and commitment.

Hilary Green- character in the play and part of core committee

Hilary is a wife, mom, artist and doula, born and raised in Jozi. As a result of her own birth experiences, she found her calling as a doula and she loves the work she gets to do with expectant and labouring moms and their babies. She believes that women need to know that they have choices in birth and that they need to be supported in their choices. Hilary is all about defending these rights and believes that the production of “Birth” by Karen Brody is a valuable tool in creating awareness of women’s rights to choice and support.

Melissa Jacobs

As a young teenager Melissa was invited to and attended a homebirth supported by a midwife. There were six women in the room including the labouring mother and it was an incredible and enlightening experience for her. This started her journey into birth. In 2006 she got married and as a natural progression became interested in babies and birth. She started speaking to friends and family and was shocked by the fear that surrounded birth - this was completely opposite to what she had experienced more than 6 years before. Melissal researched a little more and in 2008 qualified as a doula... this kickstarted her career in birthwork! She has since attended numerous courses  and attended various midwifery conferences and breastfeeding workshops. She is involved in BOLD because she felt such power seeing the play, and realised others need to see this.  It’s a truth that needs to be told! Melissa  has a strong belief in the system that Karen Clark is creating at Busfare Babies, and is joyed that they will be the beneficiaries of such activism. Melissa believes every woman, with enough support will become enlightened to her own power. Through education we can eradicate fear, which is the key to taking back our births!
